TROY, Mich.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--March 5, 2001-- One of the greatest casts ever assembled -- Marlon Brando, Richard Burton, James Coburn, John Huston, Walter Matthau, John Astin and Ringo Starr -- let it all hang out in the outrageous, uproarious '60s comedy, ``Candy,'' which will be released for the first time ever on video and DVD, by Anchor Bay Entertainment (www.anchorbayentertainment.com), on April 10.
Photos of ``Candy'' are available at www.anchorbayentertainment.com.
Based on the notorious novel by Terry Southern, Candy is a gorgeous yet innocent young woman who trippily traipses through a coast-to-coast adventure of carnal discovery -- finding lust and lunacy around every curve -- in this sexy satire, which features music by The Byrds and Steppenwolf.
During their illustrious careers, the acclaimed cast won a combined six(a) Academy Awards(TM) (out of a staggering 34(a) nominations)! The movie also marked the solo film debut of Beatle Ringo Starr, as well as the debut of Ewa Aulin, who received a Golden Globe nomination (for ``Most Promising Newcomer - Female'') in 1969 for her role as the title character.
A special, ``Limited Edition'' DVD features the disc encased in a collectable custom ``candy tin'' container; boasts a widescreen 1.85:1 presentation specially enhanced for 16x9 TVs; the original theatrical trailer and radio spots; a still gallery; talent bios; a set of full-color Collector's Cards featuring facts about the stars and their reflections on being in the film; and has been digitally mastered for optimum picture and sound quality. The limited tins are individually numbered to 16,000 and carry a suggested retail price of $39.98.
The DVD comes packaged in a deluxe red clamshell and includes all of the features of the ``Limited Edition'' DVD, except for the Collector's Cards and the special tin packaging, at a $29.98 suggested retail price.
The VHS version, which is also packaged in a deluxe red capsule clamshell, includes all the features of the DVDs, except for the Collector's Cards, radio spots, still gallery and talent bios, and its widescreen 1.85:1 presentation is not enhanced for 16x9 TVs. It will sell for a suggested retail price of $14.98.
```Candy' -- what a great movie. It was the mind-blowing thrill of my life,'' said Starr in this past fall's New York Times No. 1 best-selling book, ``The Beatles Anthology.'' ``I really loved it. And I loved meeting all those great actors and. . .hanging out. They all gave me tips, that was my acting school. . .''
Starr, along with his fellow members in the most successful group in popular music history, received a British Academy Award nomination as ``Most Promising Newcomers To Leading Film Roles'' for their acting in 1964's ``A Hard Day's Night.''
